However, on Mac:

Enter an [option]-keystroke to have accented characters at your
disposal. For instance, option-u then u will produce "�". Option-u for
umlauts, option-` for accents up and to the left, option-e for accents
up and to the right (I can never remember which one of those is grave
and which is acute).

e.g.:
Option-e then e: �
Option-` then a: �
Option-u then o: �
