We actually only recently discussed this very topic.

Here is my recommendation:

- Get a sufficiently large Firewire drive. Partition it so you have a partition of at least equal size to your system partition on it.

- Use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone (ie backup) your system partition. This clone is fully bootable. It can be cloned back in case of desaster, or you can access individual files.

- Depending on your backup needs, backup your document folders by simply copying them onto another partition of your Firewire drive. Or use a specialized backup software. Or, use CarbonCopyCloner for this task as well (however, I find CCC too slow to do this several times a day).

A firewire drive you get today should be perfectly save to use with OS X. There were problems when Panther first came out, with specific Firewire bridges (but as far as I remember they only affected Firewire 800 drives). I don't think there is any reason to be worried any more.
