M-audio products are not the only ones susceptible to this, the logic board FW was 
destroyed on my old G4 350 by hotplugging a Formac CD/RW. When I took the G4 to the 
apple service centre the engineer said that while rare, hotplugging can cause such 
failures, and that he would always follow some proceedure or other (that I forget, it 
was probably the same as the m-audio solution).

No doubt many of you have been hot plugging happily for ages without a problem though.
