I think your method seems to be the best. Write the passage in 3/4 without some of the grace notes, then change ALL noteheads to white (the notehead character for half notes). Remove stems from the notes that need to be wholes in one or two source bars, then use SmartFind and Paint or Mass Copy to copy into similar bars. Finally add the grace notes.
