Hi Johannes,
IR sync never worked very well with Palm. You are far better off getting a Palm serial-to-USB connector.
In fact, I have just such a device, which I am no longer using (since I no longer use my Palm). I'd be happy to send it to you for the cost of postage.
Also, there are big issues with Palm Desktop and OS X, you you are probably better off switching to the iApps (iCal and Address Book) and using the Palm conduit in iSync.

Sorry, this is completely off-topic, but perhaps some of the Mac experts on this list know the answer:
I just got a new iBook, and I am very happy with it. However, I also have a very old Palm, which I would like to continue using for a while. It only has an old fashioned serial connection and an IR port. I am wondering whether it is possible to add IR to my iBook with a cheap USB adapter? If so, does anyone know who makes such things, and which ones are compatible with the Mac?
I know I could probably pick up a new Palm for very little money which would support a USB connection, so I won't complain if this plan turns out to be either costly or impossible, it is just a thought.
Please answer in personal mail.
