It just seems to have happened, much to my surprise. I simply installed 2005a - no special actions involved, and opened a file in that version, and there were the 2005 preferences. I'm going to try opening 2005 now, to see what happens.
Once I find out what is "real" and what is my imagination/faulty memory or whatever, I'll report back and let you know where the pref file is etc.
Give me a few minutes and I'll write again.

In my experience, this is correct - same preference file for 2k5 and 2k5a; a small, but not unappreciated convenience.
