There are a few useful tools:
MemoryStick:

This will show you the number of swapfile and active/inactive memory, and
warn you when paging.

MenuMeters

It gives much more detailed status in many areas.  But you need to be
careful of polling since, as top also does, polling eats CPU.

And my favorite: GeekTools, which I can't live without.

I use this tool to monitor system.log and console.log on my desktop.  I
also run shell command 'vm_stat' to monitor my vm status which is
displayed on my desktop as well.  This tool is essential to recording
session work I do since it gives me early warning in case of trouble.
