Dear Aaron,

In Options/Document Options/Music Spacing the item selected for "Manual Positioning" is often misunderstood or overlooked by some users, and the setting can lead to unwanted results. When it is set to "Incorporate," any manual spacing changes will be saved along with the note spacing. This is useful when you find that normal spacing gives bad results and you have applied some kind of manual spacing in the measures. When it is set to "Clear," any manual adjustments to the selected measures are lost before note spacing is applied. When it is set to "Ignore," Finale applies spacing including your manual positioning.

Sometimes spacing has become jumbled for some reason or other. If "Incorporate" is set, the jumble is likely to persist after a spacing command. Then it's a good idea to change to "Clear" and apply spacing to the measures again.

Hi all,

Every now and then I come upon a measure that Finale just flat out spaces incorrectly. Most often it's either a short note placed too close to its neighbor (so that flags collide with things), or accidentals which are completely ignored in spacing. Sometimes I have two identical measures in a row, and Finale spaces one correctly and not the other.

Someone suggested (it may have been Jari or Johannes) that one workaround for this is to use TGTools to insert and remove a small amount of space into the measure. I have found that it even works to use TGTools to insert *0* EVPU at the begining of the measure -- the measure width is not affected at all, but suddenly things are spaced correctly.

Can anyone with a better understanding of Finale's inner workings shed some light on (a) what is getting screwed up, (b) how this seemingly unrelated TGTools operations fixes things, and (c) why Coda can't fix this?

I'm on Finale 2004b, by the way, so I'd also be interested in knowing whether this is fixed in 2005.

Thanks,
Aaron.
