The "Show Active Layer Only" is no more, apparently. So how do I select a
single layer to clear its contents? Simply selecting the layer and then the
music in question still removes the contents in all layers when I hit
backspace.

"Show Active Layer Only" is still there. It's in Options menu now, that's all.
