Hi all!
I've been having this problem with lyrics for a while now. Every so often, the hyphens for syllable breaks will continue even after another syllable and sometimes through the next word. I've tried re-entering the syllables, but I get the same thing. How do I fix this?
1) Save your file.
2) Switch to page view, and find the systems and staves with the extra hyphens.
3) Using "type into score", append to the first and last syllable assigned to each staff with the offending hyphens a suitable marker; I sometimes use XXX
4) Open the "Edit Lyrics" dialog box on the Lyrics menu.
5) Look for the markers you added in item 2. The most likely possiblity, based upon my experience, is that between each pair of markers, you have a syllable in which the first character is a hyphen, which may, or may not, be immediately following a "real" hyphen. For example, you may see "-this", or "some- -thing" like this.
6) In the edit lyrics dialog box, remove just the extra hyphens, so that you see "this", or "some-thing" like this.
7) Click "OK" to exit the "edit lyrics dialog" window. Problem should be solved.
NB: Removing the hyphens of the sort as I describe in this message does not change the number of syllable. I MOST EMPHATICALLY ADVISE THAT YOU DO NOT MAKE ANY EDITS IN THE EDIT LYRICS DIALOG BOX THAT MAKES A CHANGE IN THE NUMBER OF SYLLABLES. CHECK TO SEE IF YOU'VE CHANGED THE NUMBER OF SYLLABLES BY LOOKING AT THE LAST NOTE IN EACH STAFF; IF IT HAS A SYLLABLE YOU ORIGINALLY ASSIGNED TO ANOTHER STAFF, ABANDON YOU WORK, RE-OPEN THE FILE, AND TRY AGAIN.
Ooops. Sorry, I didn't mean to shout.
