That's how I learned in school, but I found it can be frustrating when you are conducting and have to look for the sign to find it out, and I prefer stems goes up and down for a2. Is this a bad practice?
No that's not a bad practice -- both systems work just fine.
I prefer to see the 2 separate parts on 2 separate staves in the scores I conduct from.
