So here's the latest issue: proprietary Apple programs won't launch
anymore. Safari, Mail, etc. just won't come up. They did before because
I've used them. In fact, I found that Safari was the only program for the

unexpectedly quits immediately after launching, when loading Internet.

I've run DiskWarrior 3.02, no problems. TechTool Pro 4, no problems.
Repaired Permissions till I'm blue in the face. Nada. Up on the Apple site
there are discussions about fonts causing similar problems. Man, that's a
minefield in OS X, but I have no duplicate fonts installed.

Everyone has given good advice, and to that I will add what caused me problems in my OSX move.

I apparently had a bad RAM chip. OS9 would boot and run, although it would crash regularly, which was nothing new. But OSX wouldn't do anything! I would get kernel panic errors (what a name! Made me think my computer was having a nervous breakdown.) Finally Tech Tool apprised me of the problem, and removing the bad chip solved everything in one go. But you said you already ran Tech Tool, so I guess that would have shown up.
