My recommendation on the PC side is Sony. While they're a bit spendy,
they're great machines and places like ubid.com have good deals on them. I
have a Vaio desktop that I've used for years without problems, My wife liked
my machine so much that we got her a Vaio as well. We've got a couple of
Vaio laptops here that we've used for testing for a looonggg time and have
very few problems with them.

Along with everyone else, I'd make sure it had a dual-layer DVD burner, a
Wireless 802.11b/g card, and a decent graphics card in it.

If you want her to have a Mac, get a Mac, though. Mac hardware is good stuff
if you can afford it (I can't however afford either at the moment :-( )

I hate both MS and Apple equally, so I have no bias, and therefore no need
to fan the flame of the platform war, other than pure amusement. :-)
