Taris L Flashpaw wrote, with respect to the practice of beaming choral or vocal music to syllables:

That's older practice. Modern practice is to beam it as you would instrumental music, regardless of syllables.

but I would note that what Taris describes as "Modern Practice" is by no means universally accepted. I still see a substantial quantity of choral music published using the "older practice", and among the musicians with whom I am acquainted, which includes a number still acquiring their credentials, there are about as many who prefer the older practice as there are that prefer the newer one.

If one is preparing scores with an eye towards submitting them for consideration for publication, in my opinion it is best to obtain a copy of the description of engraving standards from the prospective publisher, or alternatively, to study enough music published recently by the prospective publisher to be able to deduce what the standards are, and follow those. If one is preparing scores for hire, find out the preferences of the person paying the fee.

If one is preparing scores for oneself, the most important thing is consistency. Develop a standards manual, and stick with it.
