can anyone tell me of a situation which occurs with some frequency where you would want the smart shapes to appear _in_ the staff? i have come across them in published miniature scores or REALLY cramped orchestral scores, but these are compromises in any case. with the improvements to the expression tool, problems of dynamics positioning which arose between C and transposed scores have largely been taken care of, but it seems to me that:

1) hairpins should by default sit outside the staff to which they are attached (can be overridden, like horizontal hairpins and engraver slurs)
2) certain measure-attached smart shapes should shift accordingly when toggling between C and transposed... need to think this one through more, but for sure hairpins, maybe "transition" arrows [--------->].

since _most_ users use either C or transposed scores (not both), the effect this has on the appearance/layout of the score is perhaps moot: those who prefer C scores work on the score in C, and when the parts are extracted, positioning is taken care of automatically and the user deals with a small amount of fussing in the extracted parts to clean up, and those who prefer transposed can work directly in the transposed score, and have very little fussing left in the parts.

PS yes i know TGTools align-move...

I can't think of any situation, but it's not really clear to me why you're asking -- I haven't had hairpins show up on the staff when I haven't put them there. Is this happening to you, or is this more of an information-gathering question?

As for concert-pitch scores vs. transposed scores, I think it depends as much on the clients one works for as it does what one might prefer personally. I've worked with both, so I'm not sure your statement that most users use either one or the other but not both is valid without further data collection.

I'm not sure how that relates to your hairpins-on-the-staff question.
