I usually use IE, Safari and OmniWeb, but I thought I would try Firefox after seeing your message.
I downloaded the latest version to my computer (Spring 2002 dual 1G G4 1.5G RAM, 30G free drive space, OS X 10.3.8) (SWB/Yahoo DSL).
I went and played around on Buy.com with Firefox, Safari and IE for about ten minutes, clicking in random areas and doing searches. I never found a page that took over 2 seconds to load. My impression was that Safari was marginally snappier, but that's just a casual impression.
I wonder if the problem isn't with browsers and sites, but your ISP (and maybe some of your settings).
