Understood. >Even if Mac users are pointed to the Hammersound site, as far as I know >there is no way to decode sfArk V1 archives. Unfortunately it seems that >the Langton violin sounds are in that format, and in that format only. Are you just talking about the sfArk decoder? The resulting files are .sf2, including the Langton, Florestan, and Cadenza strings. Is that what you mean? I'd be happy to send a Langton violin .sf2 just for a test (about 700K). I don't know if the soundfont files are cross-platform. >Furthermore, after having fiddled with the demo of polyphontics, the >only soundfont editor on the Mac afaik, I have decided that this thing >is not really usable for my purposes, as it doesn't allow me to load a >soundfont and only exchange certain patches. All it can do is build a >complete soundfont from scratch, and that's simply far too much time wasted. Forget soundfont editors... they're a big pain unless you have a free day (or two) (or 10). Maybe I wasn't clear, or maybe this isn't possible for you -- I still don't know if GPO grabs all channels and banks. Maybe you can try this: 1. Launch your standalone soundfont player (as Finale doesn't take plug-in ones). 2. Load the Langton violin soundfont into channel 1 (it varies significantly from player to player on how this is done) 3. In Finale Midi setup, set 1-16 to GPO (makes it Midi device 1). 4. In Finale Midi setup, set 17-32 to your soundfont player (makes it Midi device 2). 5. In the Finale Instrument list, change your violin to channel 17 (channel one on Midi device 2). If this works, you can save the instrument list in your default file ... and gradually build what you want as you find instruments more to your taste. The GPO violin problem might be just a minor annoyance compared to setting up a soundfont player. :) Or maybe you can contact the GPO author and request a fix?
