Noel (and Johannes) -
This sounds like good advice. I'll have plenty to do until then just
getting comfortable in the program. Not to speak of all the projects I
have to keep going alongside that process. I'll be keeping close watch
around the time you say, I appreciate that information.
(The whole issue of the ability to create retro-compatible files is an
interesting one. I'm curious why the developers of Finale chose not to
take that route. However, for me it's not a big issue. Sibelius does it,
but I rarely ever use it.)

I'd join Johannes in his advice:
If I were you I would wait a little and upgrade to Fin2k6 when it comes
out, usually in late summer,
since if there is anything in 2k2 that you'd really have to "unlearn" for
2k6, it does not immediately occur to me what it is. However, it is my
recollection [NB: it should be noted that my recollection is not what it
used to be, and this should be factored into your evaluation of this
advice] that if you upgrade within a narrow window just before the new
release, you get the old release, and the next release at no additional
cost. Based upon that, in your situation, I'd probably order the upgrade
sometime around August 8. My reason for this is one of the complaints
that comes up on the list with some regularity. Although Finale will
generally successfully read files created with a Finale Family product of
the same version or previous ones, it has never been designed to _write_
files compatible with earlier versions, and I don't expect it to ever be
able to do so. Having 2005 and 2006 gives you a future advantage in
working with someone who did not upgrade from 2005 of your both being able
to work on the same version of the file.
Otherwise, if he has 2005, and you have 2006, you can open a file he
created, and make edits, but when you forward the file back to him, he
will not be able to open it.
