What else can I try?
Open up Application>Utilities>Activity Monitor and see if you have
any processes running that shouldn't be...Tiger is really cool with
this...it now shows problem processes in red so that they are easily
spotted.
But in Panther, you will have to use your judgement and see if
anything strikes you as odd as far as what should be running and what
may be hanging you up...

P.S..with the exception of Now Up-to-Date/Contact..and Protools
LE...(I think the TDM version is now O.K. in Tiger) there should be
not reason to delay the upgrade to Tiger if you can...
