Well, I'm not on a Mac, and I'm not comparing 10-year-old versions of the programs involved. I'm comparing the current available demos from the two competitors. Sibelius is unusably slow, Finale is perfectly snappy. > Darcy James Argue / 2005/07/14 / 02:00 PM wrote: > >If you have an OpenGL-compatible video card, drawing in Sib 3 is > >virtually instantaneous, and drawing in Sib 4 is still very good. > >(There are some slowdowns when you have to actually adjust things, > >but just dragging or scrolling the music is very speedy.) > > This is a little puzzling to me. OGL is for real-time update. Static > image shouldn't have that much benefit from it. You say dragging/ > scrolling shows slowness then I'd think OGL is not working properly. There are things happening in the way Sibelius interacts with the display that vastly increase the impact of display bottlenecks, such as redrawing a text expression between the typing of each character in it. Perhaps that's so that a center-justified text item will show up properly centered? I'd much rather the centering happen *after* I leave the typing mode (i.e., after hitting ESC or clicking the mouse outside the expression, to get rid of the cursor and get back to the purple-selected appearance, which means you can nudge/drag the expression around the screen). Since you can't move the thing while in typing mode, it seems to me not really necessary to have full WYSIWYG at that point. But I'm only guessing at the reason for the flickering between characters. -- David W.
