Actually, Finale is only leagues ahead of Sibelius in terms of playback with included 3rd-party add-on, and then only for those who are orchestrally inclined, not for those who work in the band, jazz band, marching band fields.

Let's be honest.

The only way Finale is ahead of Sibelius in terms of playback for any band work or other ensemble which includes saxes is if we use the included smartmusic soundfont. And I haven't used the included Finale soundfont for years. I use the same playback devices for both software programs.

So how exactly is Finale leagues ahead of Sibelius in terms of playback? I'm certain that if the sales records at J.W.Pepper were surveyed that we would find that far more band music is sold than orchestral music, especially if we include concert band, jazz band and marching band.

So why isn't Finale going to include saxes? And comparing Finale to a competing program does nothing to lessen this gross shortcoming of the only major feature of this 2006 upgrade. That's a straw-man argument which has no bearing on Finale2006 shortcomings. Having sounds for every conceivable articulation from a viola does nothing to alleviate the hassles that band composers will have in trying to come up with the wonderful GPO renditions which Finale is basing this upgrade's success on.

All Finale has to do is to announce that there will be an upgrade patch to the included GPO sounds which will include saxes, once the sounds are completed and ready to ship from Garritan. That way, just as with the orchestral sounds, if we want the full set we can spend the extra money, but if we are satisfied with the included sounds, our $99 will buy the same quality output for band work that it is buying for classical orchestra work.

Who needs Side Drum Hit RIGHT Hand and Side Drum Hit LEFT hand? What if our drummer is left handed and the sounds ought to be reversed? C'mon people, why not include Side Drum Hit Wearing Tuxedo and Side Drum Hit Wearing T-Shirt.
