I just leave the minimum measure width at zero: works fine. I think it's set that way anyway in recent versions of the default file. You never actually get zero-width measures, because Finale always makes space for the rests.

After sending that, it occurred to me that this could be the germ of
a feature request for Finale -- if the minimum measure width could
somehow be tied to a particular meter. That is, if the minimum
measure width applied only to a full measure of the displayed meter,
then one could leave it set to 1" and have a 1/4 measure's minimum
width be proportionally reduced.

Of course, there are problems here with pieces that switch meters a
lot.

Basically, the default minimum width settings for measures and multi-
measure rests seem to me to be too wide. Half an inch is often too
narrow for a whole-note measure (or a multi-measure rest), but is
often too wide for measures with reduced numbers of beats.

I'm not sure how this could be implemented, but there ought to be a
way to figure it out to be something that makes more sense than the
current setup.

Ideas?
