Of course not. If you don't load the KS instruments, obviously
keyswitches won't work.
Ah, I thought there was something a bit smarter going on.
In GPO Full there are lots of different choices of, for example, solo
violin, I take it then that I can have the exact choice of violin I
want and still use keyswitching then?
Simon,
There are only three different solo violins in GPO Full -- a Gagliano,
a Stradivarius, and a Guarneri. There are keyswitched versions of all
three instruments.
What may be confusing you into thinking there are "lots of different
choices" is that there are minor variations of these instruments. They
use exactly the same sample sets, but they have been tweaked slightly
to sound like different players (so, for instance, unisons sound like
unisons and not solos). So you have "Violin 1 Gagli Player 1", "Violin
2 Gagli Player 2," etc. Unfortunately, these variations are not
keyswitched, so they are, for Finale purposes, useless. There is only
one keyswitched version of each solo violin.
So if you want both violins in your string quartet to use the Gagliano
sample set, you are out of luck (unless you want to use the
non-keyswitched variations, but you probably don't want that).
Perhaps Gary Garritan can be persuaded to make the "Player 1," Player
2" etc variations keyswitched -- but for now, you are limited to a
maximum of three distinct keyswitched solo violins in GPO Full.
If that's the case, it begs the question, what is the best way of
having the full choice of instruments and then switching to pizz. for
example.
You can still do some of that that the traditional way -- via channel
changes instead of keyswitches. (You will have to turn off support for
pizz. in the HP options if you do that.) But that's really much more
trouble than it's worth. I'd rather stick with the KS instruments
exclusively, even if there aren't as many variations as there are with
the non-KS instruments.
And, in my opinion, Finale GPO Edition should not have included *any*
non-keyswitched strings. It's just too confusing. Most people have no
idea what a "keyswitch" is, nor do they care. They just want to hear
"pizz" when they write "pizz", and "arco" when they write "arco".
Although I bought GPO a while ago, I bought it to use in 2006 and have
barely used it. The results are great but like others this KS thing is
pretty badly documented - I think they're taking a lot for granted in
the Docs.
I agree -- obviously, this is *really* confusing for a lot of people.
