I'm no fan of student discounts anywhere, but when I voiced an opinion about them here about a year ago, it was forcefully pointed out to me that the discount has nothing to do with public policy nor rewarding those who needing or deserving of financial assistance. Rather, it is a straightforward business practice aimed at increasing profit through market share. Pretty much the same reason that tobacco companies target their advertising at young people.
