I'm writing a lyric in a score; there is a quarter note where two words
are to be sung as one, "and_I'll". With Finale 2003 I put an underscore
(shift+"-"key) like I wrote before and it worked, now with 2005 the
underscore is interpreted by Finale as a word splitting and the cursor
jumps to the next note!
Is it a bug or I'm missing something?

I posted the similar question a few days ago but got no response. In
short, you can achieve what you want by turning Smart Ext off, but my
problem is I need Smart Ext, and can't find the way to have them both.

and I must confess this is not a problem I would face, as instead of using the underscore. like_this, I personally prefer the caret, like^this.

Otherwise, the best work-around I can think of to this issue is to use define an articulation or shape expression, using the font character, sized appropriately. Where you need the underscore between two lyrics syllables, use the "hard space" character, and place the underscore in the way one usually places an expression or articulation. The disadvantage to this method are dealing with instances of an extra expression or articulation; the advantage is portability; you don't need to worry about someone else having a probem when they open the file in which you have used the technique, as the expression will be part of the library. The other work-around is to modify your font so that the alt-160, or some other unused character is replaced with an underscore. The advantage of this is that there is less work to apply the symbol (admittedly more than typing a shifted key from the normal keyboard, but not so much as extra as typing the hard space and then applying the articulation or expression), the disadvantage is that the file is not portable; you will not get the expected results if you try to open it on a machine which does not have the altered font file.
