If you are using speedy entry (you didn't say), try this: hit "option" and the number 3 and enter the first note as an eighth note triplet, then put the cursor back on that note and change it to a quarter note. Finale assumes that the first note value you choose is the value of the triplet notes. I can't see how it could be done another way, since Finale is good but can't read your mind, so this is a pretty good method.
