Chuck,
I believe in Tiger, most Macs now support screen rotation from the
"Displays" preference pane without having to purchase a separate,
retail ATI video card. For instance, screen rotation is supported on
my Mac mini and OS 10.4.2.
Video performance in the rotated mode is extremely slow, however. I
don't know if it would be faster on a machine with a better video
card (or faster processor), but on the Mac mini's built-in video
(found also in many iBooks and eMacs), enabling rotation results in
unacceptably slow performance.

Andrew et al,
This depends on the vintage of the G5 (if I understand things I've
read here - grace a Darcy and Hiro), and whether or not you have
the required graphics card. I think there's an ATI 9200 that
supports this (Versavison), and the maxed out ATI 9800 definitely
does. Check the system hardware on your setup - and then check
ATI's web site, if you need to upgrade the graphics card.
LCD monitors have some real advantages over CRT's for the kind of
work we do - no screen flicker - less eye fatigue and the ability
to rotate. (A nice support arm is also handy for positioning
flexibility, though they are pricey - around $300, I think.) As
long as absolute color fidelity is not an issue, there's a lot to
recommend them, and the price of what seems to be a comparable Dell
is about a third of what I paid for a Samsung SyncMaster 243T only
about 18 months ago, and you get extra USB ports - often useful.
Just my 2C.

I recently read a good review of Dell's UltraSharp 2005FPW 20-inch
LCD monitor ($525):

This monitor, as well as the 24-inch version (2405FPW, $1019),
rotates 90 degrees. (Well, I _think_ the 24-inch model rotates.)
Is anyone on the list using either of these monitors with a Mac and
Tiger? If so, does the rotation work?
Paul,
I don't have *those* monitors, but I do have a 20" ViewSonic
VP201b, which rotates 90 degrees. It works perfectly well with a
G5 and Tiger. It's way cool! You may want to set up a QuicKeys (or
iKeys) shortcut to push all of the right buttons for you, saving
you the effort of doing same in the Displays pref pane. (I also
use a different resolution than the default, so QuicKeys comes in
extra handy).
Good luck, and have fun!
