The spacing around such notes will vary (in my opinion) depending on
whether there is only one note in a measure or whether there are several
notes in a measure. I don't think there is any single setting for space
around these notes which would work in all situations.
Have you played around with the mininum measure width setting? Try
making that much smaller than it currently is and see what happens.
