Actually the Ampex problem was, as far as I know, unique to that one type of Analogue Audio tapes (although very widespread, and we lost a whole collection of reel tapes - I guess we could bake them but it's not worth the effort, I guess).
The problem with digital tape is different, but in a way worse, since the magnetization will eventually "fade", and below a certain threshold the signal will just drop out completely, and cannot be saved at all.
