Hey, Everyone - I've gone blank this afternoon for some reason! Could
someone let me know what this chord would be called: D - Fb - Ab

I know it's a D diminished but can't remember if this is the regular
diminished chord or a "doubly diminished" since it's 2 minor 3rds... Just
gone brain-dead for some reason! How would this be indicated in a lead
sheet for guitarists? D° - ?

Thanks!

Jacki

Depending on the context, it looks more like it should be respelled D - E - G# as an E7 chord with the seventh in the bottom (and missing the 5th, but that's the first note to drop when you are missing enough voices to play everything.) If it is spelled correctly, then it might be a Bb7(b5), without a bass note, expecting to resolve to an Eb something. You didn't say whether the bass note is included in that voicing or not, which definitely affects things.

There are some other possibilities, but it definitely ISN'T D diminished, as that would need the F to be natural. The so-called "double-diminished" (which is a classical term anyway, most guitarists don't use it) would include a Cb, and would be called Ddim7.

What key are you in, and what are the chords around it? This will give a good indication of what to call this chord, as context is everything.
