Now, you see, THIS is the kind of knowledge that might go a long way to helping MakeMusic solve this. If I better understood the way Finale sees things, I might understand what exactly goes wrong when a bug bites, and I would able to give MM all the info it needs. I might not have thought of doing a file integrity check, for example, which yielded all kinds of useful info.

Thankfully, I haven't seen this exact bug yet, but I haven't got 2006 yet, either...
