Radium49 driver is listed as compatible with OSX10.4.3.  Do you have
v3.2.1?  I have no experience with M-Audio, but I think I heard it is
more reliable to use MIDI I/O rather than USB.

Which Powerbook you have?  When did you buy?  In any case, I don't think
any of G4 Powerbook had USB/MIDI issue.  I suspect your M-Audio is being
flaky, or driver isn't updated.

Again, open AMS and see if Radium49 isn't grayed out.  If it is, just
unplug and replug it till it reappear.

A cheap MIDI interface, like MOTU FirstLane would be a good start.
