Hi Dennis,

I don't let my original files go to anyone. Not because I don't want to let any of my "secrets" out (I'm happy to help when I can if I have the time) but because ultimately I'm responsible for the end product. There's just too much that can go wrong when the original files are being altered....and according to Murphy's law those things will show up on the scoring stage and that would be bad...very bad....

So I "print" out PDF's and then post them on my server so that the composer can download and mark up the score as much as they want. They are then picked up from the composer I do the fixes in both the score and parts myself.

Perhaps if he insists on the original files, you can lock the files and explain to the composer that you always take care and do a Save As before making changes to his scores so that you can always go back to the original if necessary. Or, you can let him know that you would be happy to make any changes he would like you to make and figure out a way to get PDF's to him to mark up and then pick them up again when he is done. Point out that you would like to make things as convenient for him as possible while allowing him to fine tune his scores.

This won't start one, but I do have a general question. :)

I've almost never been asked for Finale files, but tend to provide them
anyway, just so there's a record in more than one place.

But last week, I was asked for the files by a composer who wanted to tweak the results. I thought nothing of it -- until he was having nightmares with my multiple workarounds, forgot to turn off automatic spacing, didn't know how to work with the page size (I work in an approximately 9x12 original before going to PDF) and couldn't read my custom fonts on his Mac (just
Roman numerals, in this case).

What do folks normally do? Because I do exclusively new music, it's not like I'm a jealous guardian of the original files. I feel like they belong
with the composer. On the other hand, I'm not enthused about offering
ongoing help in this way, even though this is an occasional but faithful
engraving client.

Dennis
