I learned solfege as a grad student in Music Theory. (Avo Somer - Eastman)
I am having difficulty in understanding the "fixed do" school.

I would think that, once you know the letter names, there is no point in
"fixed do".
And, if that is true, why not teach the letter names to begin with?
That said, having learned the solfege system at such a late date, I
consider it useless. I never think about do or anybody else.
When I sight sing, I sing intervals. And I am having a problem with
understanding how any other system works.
Well, there's always tonic/dominant, that is built into the brain ;-)
(At least for Western singers).
