Ah, but, in a Cathedral setting the soloist (who would be one of the choir)
would sing with the choir when it says tutti.

Here's what Oxford University Press did in setting Sir William Walton's
"Set me as a seal upon thy heart". The staves for the chorus are
labeled to the left of the first system from top to bottom: "Soprano",
"Alto", "Tenor", and "Bass". The first three bars of the work are an
ntonation by a tenor, and are designated "solo". Where the balance of
the choir (including the tenors) enter at the beginning of bar four, the
word "Tutti" is printed directly above the tenor part. The tenor
soloist answers the choir beginning on the second half of beat three of
measure 6, and is indicated by the word "Solo" at the beginning of
measure 6. The soloist at this point has an indendent lyric line (above
the staff). Where the choir again answers in response beginning in the
second half of beat three in measure two, the designation "Tutti"
appears just above the tenor line at that point. There is a soprano
solo beginning on the second half of beat three in measure 29, again,
indicated by the use of the word "solo", and at the point the soprano
solo ends, the use of the word "Tutti" over the soprano part. The
soprano soloist also has different word underlay, and thus a separate
lyric line.
