I have never had to do incipits before, what is the best way to do them?
I am talking about the clef, meter and first note, placed before the
beginning of the piece at every staff, to indicate the original notation.

I have found the easiest way is to create just what you want for the
incipit(s) and then export them as graphics.
Then import the graphic and place where you want.
