Incidentally, it's the same "fixed length" character that you already know. What makes it extendable is how the options are set in the articulation definition. In the Articulation Designer dialog, check the box that says "copy the symbol" and choose vertical or horizontal. That box is only enabled if positioning is set to manual.

In theory you could do the same thing with any other symbol, but there's only a couple of symbols that are designed so that they look good with several lined up in a row.
