Listeners are at the end of the music supply chain. They choose from what's
available, so just recycle to the top of my argument and start again, but
one step later in the process.

It's the same point, though. Flood the nonpop recording/concert market with
music that's cheap to make and readily available in quantity, and that's
what the (small classical) public listens to. The classical music industry
is just as vulnerable to McDonalds-isms as any other field that doesn't
attend to both its standards and its innovation.
