WRT your comment:

I should have mentioned that this was a FinMac03 issue (since I still have to use that platform quite a bit). I cannot find an expression table anywhere in it. Also, there is a difference between the alert I quoted above, and the dialog that allows you to either replace the entry or delete it from the library and score.

I have seen exactly the same error message you have, attempting to do the same thing. I do suspect that there are expressions in the expression library that are using the shapes you cannot delete. In my case, I accessed the expression library, by going to the score, selecting the expression tool, and doubleclicking as if I were going to add an expression. Once in the table, I simply selected each text expression listed, in order, and selected the "edit" button; in the edit expression dialog box, I selected the playback options button, and made sure the second item in every expression had a value of zero in the "execute shape" box.. I went to the shape expressions, and first deleted every shape in that list that I did not want. Then, from within the shape expression editor, I deleted the shapes that I no longer wanted in the shape list. When I was finished, deleting, I exited from the expression dialog boxes. Even expressions which are not used in the score, or expressions which are used, but have playback set to none, or set to a value, if they have a shape in the "execute shape" box, will flag the corresponding shape so that it cannot be deleted.
