So which is more important when you are doing a figured bass?

to try to keep an even line across the page?

For example, would all the single figures be on the same baseline, if you were to draw a line across the paper
with the line touching the base of those numbers, or would you expect to see some numbers lower than others,
because of the stem/beams pointing down and going beneath the stave?

For me, typographically, I'd like to keep everything uniform, but my hunch is that you can't--not if you can't flip the
beams upwards.

Thank you.

My solution has been to flip them over, so they're pointing upwards, giving me room to put the figures.  But I do wonder, would I be creating a music engraving faux paus by having the stems flipped? Obviously Finale points the direction when you enter them in, because of some "standard." I wouldn't want to violate that standard.

No, from an engraving point that is not ok. The notation should not, in
any way, be influenced by the figures.

If you use a special figured bass font like Ansgar Krause's, you can
work around this in most cases by using the lower slots - unless you
actually get 4 figures, then you need them all. In that case you have no
choice but to move the lyric or the baseline. The latter can be done
quite easily in page view, for only the current system.

What font are you using for the figures?
