This is strange.
On my Mac (FinMac2006c) the straight beam doesn't even appear in your
example! It does when there are two eighth rests then an eighth note
(when Beam Over Rests is checked), but not with a quarter rest. The
eighth note in that instance appears as a quarter note, and no
manipulation of mine can make the straight beam appear properly on
either side of the stem.
Apparently, though, the straight flag IS treated as a beam, because all
the of the Special Tools that operate on beams operate on this straight
flag, WHEN IT APPEARS.
I would go to tech support on this one. It appears to be a bug.
