Just to try to get this back to the original question: Is there a way to get the symbols to display, in effect, twice the number of measures?
Just a personal note, certainly not a criticism. Since I cannot picture what you mean by "twice the number," I'm afraid that once you find what you are looking for I would be unable to interpret it while reading the notation. Perhaps I'm just slow, but Simple is Good.
But as to wanting to revert to the stacks of rests (which go back in time to the inventor of rests with specific values, Franco of Cologne, in the 13th century), I was never so happy as when modern publications dropped that old-fashioned business in orchestral music and adopted the simple multimeasure rest convention. In either case, I'll end up counting measures, so just tell me how many measures to count!
