But as to wanting to revert to the stacks of rests (which go back in time to the inventor of rests with specific values, Franco of Cologne, in the 13th century), I was never so happy as when modern publications dropped that old-fashioned business in orchestral music and adopted the simple multimeasure rest convention. In either case, I'll end up counting measures, so just tell me how many measures to count!

I've been saved many times by the rest symbols representing the numbers of bars when the written number of bars above the symbols has been changed incorrectly or is illegible, especially when the light is less than usual.

Particularly less than useful are rests in groups of ten with no regard to musical phrases.
