Except that playback will not be ideal, since the notes before the
non-existent rest will not get note-off messages until the end of the

I've never run into that problem -- I would think the note's length
would dictate the note-off. But then often when I'm working with layers
like that it's purely an engraving project without playback, so I may be
remembering wrongly.
