I don't know the piece, so can't comment specifically. Generally, however, it would depend on how close the technical demands come to the Tchaikowsky concerto. In a fully-professional orchestra I don't think it would be a problem. Every 2nd violinist thinks s/he should be playing first, if not the Tchaikowsky itself!
