I agree with both Johannes and Christopher. I also use an HP 5100 with the duplexer, and I lease it along with my computers. I don't believe in buying computers or printers given the speed at which they turn obsolete. If you have a business that makes a living with your computer/printer, it might be looking into. The tax advantages are phenomenal. While the price of something like an HP5100 might dissuade one, consider the cost of ink over the life of the printer vs toner and inkjet printers come out way behind. That's how the printer manufacturers make their money, on ink. Plus their output seems second-rate for music.

The 5100 is a tank. It takes everything I throw at it and then some. I can count of one hand the number of misfeeds and jams I've had in the 2+ years I've leased this puppy. The output is spectacular and the only drawback, IMO, is that is doesn't do color. For that I have a 2nd printer since who prints out music in color.

It's really worth a SERIOUS consideration for music printing.

Who out there has his/her own printer for scores and parts. We're looking at an HP Designjet 70, which will handle both size and weight. Any thoughts?

In my opinion, if you want to print scores and parts directly, get a large format laser printer, like the HP LJ 5000 or 5100.

Anything that uses ink is not ideal for parts which are going to be played from.

I agree with Johannes. I used an ink jet printer for a long time, and could have bought several laser printers with what I spent on ink, and also the quality and longevity of the print is far superior on the laser printer.

I have an HP 5100, and it is very good, though there still are issues that I haven't worked out yet involving margins on large paper sizes. For now I adjust page margins or shift the paper feed over a bit to centre the print on the page, but there must be some arcane setting I haven't found yet to accomplish the same thing.

I also still haven't worked out booklet printing, as I can't get two pages to print side by side when a LATER, discontiguous page is on the left. (like, page 6 and page 3. They print on two different pages.) I don't know if it is a Finale issue, a driver issue, or an OSX issue. If anyone has a hint there, I would appreciate it.

With thick paper you won't be able to use a feed tray (I use the manual straight paper path for thick part paper) nor the mechanical duplexer (I feed the page twice) but that is a small inconvenience compared with the alternatives.
