On my printer at work, we use 11x17 for bigger drawings ;-)

I have never seen anyone print a double page that size.

Why not print 2 single pages?

Because two single pages involves creating some sort of hinge that sticks to the paper and will last as long as the paper does (an expensive and time-consuming operation when you are talking about orchestra or choir parts, not to mention the special tape), plus it simplifies enormously the task of creating booklets that you can centre-staple. Also you can run it through a photocopier in one pass instead of 4 (in the case of a double-sided, double-page part) and you never have to worry about pages getting separated.

Plus, it is the standard for parts, which is a compelling argument in itself.
