Today is the anniversary of Handel's Water Music, first performed July 17, 1717 on the Thames. And with the temperature reaching nearly 98 degrees here in New York City, anything to do with water sounds very refreshing ;)

There is a wonderful recreation of the first performance of the Water Music on a DVD featuring Andrew Manze and the English Concert.

And there is a relatively new book on the Water Music (and the Royal Fireworks Music) by Christopher Hogwood. I just finished it; and it's a great read.

It'd be wonderful to see a recreation of the Fireworks Music (complete with a reconstruction of the Fireworks Temple built in 1749) and a group of period instruments that matches the first performance. According to Mr. Hogwood, there has never been such a recreation.
