How did THEY learn it? By listening to accomplished players and
imitating them, just as one has learned any style through the
millenia. How can WE learn it? By listening to accomplished players
and imitating them, only today it's through recordings. And of
course by reading up on the subject as much as possible. Start by
understanding the baroque appoggiatura, as the writers of the time
described it, and then start treating baroque trills as ornamented
appoggiaturas. For Italian ornamentation, study the way Corelli
ornamented his adagios, and compare the written notes with the
ornamented version.
