Thanks for the reply, Michael. I believe I have the basics down about the MacSymbolFonts.txt list. It's been a very mild nuisance for me, but does span at least two versions. (I didn't use 2003 or 2004 on a regular basis, so I don't know if this sort of thing showed in those versions, but I don't recall it any earlier.) The reason I posed these questions was because I had accessed the TextEdit file (as you suggested) removed Times, and the problem returned. And the other night the problem intensified, as described previously.
The behavior seems buggy to me and I'd love to get the answers to at least a few of my questions. Questions which were asked in all sincerity, though I was a bit put out when posting. I've sent this off to macsupport and will let everyone know if they provide anything else enlightening.
